So I still often get asked ‘what is a memory bear?’ especially when I meet new people, So it’s probably about time that I explained what a memory bear actually is!
A memory bear is a handcrafted stuffed animal, typically a teddy bear, made from clothing or fabric items that belonged to a loved one. Typically this is a baby or child’s outgrown clothing, items belonging to loved one or garments worn during significant events or milestones. These bears are often created to preserve the memories and essence of someone special, whether they have passed away or are simply cherished. The primary purpose of a memory bear is to serve as a tangible keepsake, offering comfort and a physical reminder of the person or period it represents.
To be honest i haven’t come across anything i have been unable to work into a memory bear yet. So now you’re thinking what can I actually use to have made into a keepsake, here’s some ideas for you…
- Baby clothing – literally anything!
- Baby blankets, muslins, swaddles, towels – again anything goes!
- Child’s uniforms – School uniform, sports kits, Rainbows/Brownies/Guides/Scouts/Cubs/Beavers Uniforms, all the uniforms badges included too.
- Work uniforms – Military uniforms, nurses/doctors uniforms, any uniform goes even supermarket uniforms!
- Adult clothing – T-shirts, dresses, shirts, ties, handkerchiefs, coats, dressing gowns anything!
- Sentimental fabrics – Nans old curtains, table clothes, yep that works!
Although this post is primarily about memory bears, I feel it’s important to recognise that these sentimental keepsakes can take many different forms including memory quilts, blankets and cushions.
What is it’s purpose?
- Emotional Comfort – The tactile nature of a memory bear provides comfort and solace to those grieving or missing a loved one. Holding or hugging the bear can evoke a sense of closeness and connection.
- Healing and Coping – Creating or receiving a memory bear can be a therapeutic process, helping individuals cope with loss, grief, or emotional challenges. It offers a way to process feelings and find solace in the memories of the loved one.
- Personalized Keepsake – Each memory bear is unique, reflecting the personality and story of the person it represents. This personalization makes the bear a cherished keepsake for family members and friends.
- Celebration of Life – Memory bears can be used to celebrate the life and legacy of a loved one, serving as a joyful reminder of the positive impact they had on others.
- Gift of Love – Giving a memory bear as a gift can show deep care and thoughtfulness, providing comfort and remembrance to someone who shared a connection with the loved one.
- Talking point – One of my favourites, a conversation starter. Memory bears, even quilts and blankets can spark a conversation and story telling. When other people see the keepsake they’re likely to ask about it, it can serve as an opportunity to share memories and stories. Many people find talking about a loved one who’s passed extremely hard, but what we also know is talking about them, sharing those memories can be a massive help. The person may be gone from the physical world, but your memories will always remain, talk about them, share the memories.
- Heirlooms – Memory bears and keepsakes often become family heirlooms and are passed down through the family. They hold memories of the person or event it represents, the stories, the history too. Over years the memory bear can serve as a link to the past, creating connections making sure memories live on.
- Memorials and Funerals: Memory bears are often created after the passing of a loved one, given to family members as a memorial keepsake.
- Anniversaries and Special Dates: They can be given on significant dates such as birthdays, anniversaries, or holidays to remember and honour the loved one.
- Births and Milestones: Sometimes, memory bears are made from baby clothes to commemorate a child’s early years or special milestones.
- Personal Keepsake: Individuals might keep a memory bear for themselves as a comforting reminder of someone they hold dear.
So there we have it. To wrap it up and give you the short answer to ‘What is a memory bear and what is its purpose?
